Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Injections Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that people who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a leading health publication points out that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing these drugs should be informed of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally experience a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Experts believe the way of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication means hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."

A Lifelong Disease?

The NHS advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

People who have stopped the medication explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a switch activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," described an individual.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Use

Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural management.
